Winter planting seeds

Is there any trick to this? Is it simply placing the seed in soil (as
nature does) and leaving it outside for the winter?

Hi Jackie,
Basically, that is what you do. There is also something called 'winter sowing' that can be done with a little more control. Very rewarding. Take a look at the FAQ's here.
