Bugs swarmed the floor of my basement, almost looked like spiders
 

I regulary spray my home for insects. I live in Long Island, New York. Last week, I went down in the
basement. I was there 1 week before, and there was no sign of pests, so this all happened in 2 weeks
time.

So in 2 weeks time, I saw tons of "spider like bugs". Great majority, were dead. I sprayed the
basement wood ceiling maybe 6 weeks before. The bugs I am trying to identify have many legs like
spiders and the largest size was maybe 1 inch to 1.5 inches (maybe).

Why I say, I am not sure they were spiders, was that, the legs looked almost "hinged" in the sense,
that spiders I have seen in the past had "oval legs". These legs almost looked, like they had
joints.

I sprayed again, and did not see any more since I sprayed. I would have thought I would have seen
many more dead ones. There were no spider webs. When I first seen them, I vacumed all of them up and
sprayed. However, I have only seen 2 new dead ones, since spraying. In addition, I did not see, any
penetrate the 1st floor.

In the summer, I had a termite inspection, and I had none.

That's not much of a description to go on, but I wonder if you've been
invaded by box elder bugs

if that is what you are seeing they will be breeding in the crawl area
under the home, which would be the place to have treated if you went
that route. Usually found around dampness...air circulation under the
home's crawl space next Summer may help reduce their numbers.

Much appreciated. I can see I did not give you much to go on.

However, these pests, really caught me by surprise.

I think it I may have had house or field crickets. However, there was no chirping in the house. I
had 1 cricket in the summer, that drove me crazy on the "2nd floor". Finally died (I did spray, hope
he died).

However, when I just had the swarm, the majority of crickets, were dead already. So maybe they were
field crickets.

Do you know if field crickets chirp.

Or a better question, do any crickets not chirp.

Can't say about field crickets, but Camel Crickets, who inhabit my
basement, seem to make no sound.

Good discussion. I've seen same bug. At first glance looks like spider but
it hops and you see the cricket like back legs.
Spraying keeps down and I also noted that the mouse/bug sticky type traps
are good for getting them too.

Assuming you saw the link to the picture of the camel cricket I
posted, house crickets will be about the same color brown...field
crickets will be dark brown to black in color, they both chirp. As
far as I know, the Camel cricket is the only common cricket that does
not chirp. Not sure if mole crickets have a need to chirp or not, have
never really looked into it.

story about interesting effects (on plants & bugs) of groundwater
contamination from Brookhaven Laboratory.
