OT-Pennies, how do I redeem 'em?
 

Take 'em to a bank? Doesn't work, at least in the Pittsburgh, PA area.
I have around $100 worth, rolled and wrapped. A few years ago there was a penny
shortage. One local bank offered a $5 gift certificate at a local restaurant
for $50 worth of pennies. Being a DA, I didn't turn mine in. Now I wish I had.
So, any suggestions

Look for the change machines in stores, you dump your pennys into it and it
counts them and for something like a 4cents on the dollar fee it'll give you a
slip of paper you take to the casher and get your money in bills. I use the one
up at the local supermarket all the time.

But if they are already wraped, take'm with you and BUY stuff with them, I do.
I'm always looking for pennys people drop, it IS good money.

Leave multiple rolls as tips in restaurants. Make sure it's a full 20% tip
to make up for it being in pennies, but tidily rolled won't annoy 'em.

You could also glue them all over a motorcycle helmet & wear them as a
fancy headdress at mardi gra, or at your local square-dance club.

Or make home-made garden concrete stepping stones & "tile" the whole
surface of the stepping stones with pennies.

Last but not least, invite over all the littlest cousins & nieces &
nephews, unwrap the pennies, toss them all over the carport, & have a
contest to see which kid can pick up the most pennies. Each kid gets to
keep the pennies they gather, but whoever has the most also wins the
penny-laminated motorcycle helmet you made.

TRY to get coin wrappers at a bank now.......oh hell no. I had to go to

I live by you, if your ever get into Knoxville with that jar, Bi-lo off
West hills, by Borders and Petsmart has a coin counting machine. So does
Krogers in Beardon.
I just took a 3 lb coffee can in and had a little over $170.00!

person responsible for me being here up on the ridge and being a master
gardener and who has given me so many volunteers of her perennials and such

They need the change for customers. Give it a try.

Salvation Army bucket a Christmas time. Take off the donation from taxes.

Seems strange that a bank won't exchange money, but I live in the South
where the folks are considered 'poor' and I've never had a problem with any
place taking pennies as legal tender.

Now I see signs all over the place that say "Can't take bills larger than
$20." And once when I went to my bank for cash, I wanted $100 bills
(because I was going furniture shopping and cash talks when haggling) and
the largest they'd give me were $20s. I was confused that they didn't have
bills larger than $20s on hand.

In my country (the U.S.A.), pennies are legal tender. A bank doesn't
have any choice but to take them. It may be different with other
institutions such as a savings and loan or a credit union, but a
national bank is required to honor the currency. A penny is currency.

Many US banks charge a fee to machine-count & machine-roll pennies, & will
not accept pennies that are not rolled. So if you show up with a sack or a
jar of pennies, they will not count them for you unless you pay them, &
will refuse to take them if you refuse to pay for them to handle them. It
would be interesting to test the federal law on this with a class action
suit against the banking industry, but somehow I suspect their influence
in government vastly exceeds our individual rights, so as legal tender
pennies will continue to be discounted via fees at bankers' whims.

I've heard it costs more than a penny for the government to make a penny &
the mint would like to phase them out, but it's politically unacceptable
cuz people like the idea that pennies exist even if they don't like
pennies.

Some supermarkets have machines that will eat your change and give you
bills. I was told they charge 9 cents on the dollar. No personal
experience.

Do you have 7-11s? Roll and sell. They will love you for it.

Or the grocery stores have the coinstar machines that swipe 8 cents on
the dollar. I, too, have many pennies and never thought i would have a
problem taking them to the bank! Or keep them in your glove box and
use them for a paper here, a coffee there.

Its a shame that we can't get rid of pennies. They are such a waste
of time and effort.
I just don't understand why it is politically unacceptable, except of
course that will allow businesses to round up to the nearest nickel.
That means higher costs for customers, and added profits for the
business, which is always unPC. But we're only talking pennies per
transaction!
But it still makes no sense when people will not even pick up pennies
off the floor, and they're giving them away at store counters to make
even change.
Get rid of them I say. We'll be better off for it.
