How can I deter the *(^%#^#@ squirrels from devastating my bulbs short of
the 22cal deterent?

Default squirrells and my bulbs

You can also get some chicken wire or 3/4 inch wire mesh and make little
baskets for the bulbs. If you take them out, this also makes it easier to
do.
