Default New mowing deck for old Craftsman tractor needed

I would like to purchase a new mowing deck. Sears doesn't sell them as far
as I can tell from sears.com. These things seem fairly universal. Can
someone tell me where to look? TIA.

Not universal at all. Find out which contractor made your particular Sears.
They used different manufacturers at different times. And see if the deck
model number has a manufacturers conversion number. Actually the tractor
could be made by a different outfit that made the deck. Be prepared to spend
almost as much for a replacement deck as you can buy a new machine for at
year end sale prices.

Not quite that much, but it will cost between $300 and $400 for a
replacement. I checked on replacing mine (Murray) on an Agway tractor.

http://www.milacalawn.com/parts.asp

use the shop online parts look up. after I find something
of interest say for example the parts diagram for my 1986 year
model White GT1810 Garden Tractor's steering I can save the
exploded parts view to my PC then share it with anyone to aid
in the discussion of how to set the toe in.

from their pages for quick reference to my page.
http://personalpages.bellsouth.net/t...-steering.html

or people can just use the http://www.milacalawn.com/parts.asp
page to find parts for their machine.

http://www3.sears.com

Search for your mower by model number. They do indeed sell the complete
deck unit for mid age models.. I could get a whole new one for mine and
it's a 90's.

Take mine for example, a model 917.255450... Under the product selection
list shows a selection for "42" MOWER DECK".. Ticking the "View Part
List" beside it and hitting continue pulls up the parts for the deck.

At the very end of that part list is "MOWER DECK, COMPLETE (STD
DECK-ORDER MULCHER BLADE, MULCHING AND GAUGE WHEEL COMPONENTS
SEPARATELY-KEY NOS. 11, 74 THRU 79 AND 80 THRU 88)" which should be the
complete deck. Be sure to talk to someone at Sears to be totally sure
you don't need blades or misc parts.
