Is buying a $1000 mower every few seasons better than paying $5000 and
hoping it will last?

Depends on your yard size, and what you want to do with the machine.

A $5000 mower WILL last. Look around at how many old JD's, Cub Cadets, and
other premium brands you see. I see a different 1960's-era JD about every
week in the summer.

Can't say I've ever seen a MTD or Murray or Crapsman older than a few years.

I have a 1982 Simplicity 14 horsepower with hydrostatic drive. This

tractor runs as good as it did when purchased. A friend has a 2000 Craftsman
that is nothing but trouble. He borrows my old tractor often.

Try a snapper...I have a 1973 model and my Dad has a 1968 model. They are
almost indestructable, replacements parts are reasonably priced and they
will mow just as good as a $5000 mower.
