Westwood 1300M

Hi,
I'm new to this forum, I have just bought a new house and it has just over 1/2 an acre of grass. This has had small cows grazing on it on occasions to keep it down. I obviously dont want grazing but instead want it as a large grass garden. It is quite flat and not rough and when we got it a month ago it was about 10 - 12 inches long. I bought a Westwood 1300M ride on. Bearing in mind this is new to me, have you any tips on using it ?.
I initially mowed it although it's probably a bit too long for this mower but I did it. Then I went over and over it attempting to let it collect.
One of mu questions is, at what length should I cut the grass ? and how well once it's under control will the collector work ?. Is it OK to mow it without the collector on ? and just leave the cuttings there ?.

Any advise would be welcomed.

Thanks

Glynn

Depending on what you want. If it is just to be a mowed field, you may want
to only cut it at the maximum height the mower can be set at. If you want it
more of a lawn you will want to cut it shorter, somewhere between 2 and 3
inches depending on the grass species. You will find that the grass that
prefers cutting short will start taking over while the grass that doesn't
like being cut short will die back.

The collector will work as well as its design allows it to work. Some work
well, some don't. Most need a high-lift blade to work somewhat properly.
Most don't work well on new juicy spring grass nor on wet grass or heavy
dew.

You can leave the cuttings on the grass as long as the grass is not buried
under the cuttings, and that will depend on how often you mow. You need to
get a feel for the grass and mowing. There are no hard rules. Things will
vary according to your schedule, weather, season, grass species and the
soil.
