Default radishes

We don't seem to be able to grow satisfactory radishes. They sprout ok and
the plants look sort of ok, but the radishes are small, and if you wait for
them to get bigger, they just get woody. We have sandy loam soil. Other
root vegetables (beets, carrots) seem fine.

Any advice?
