Don't start by looking at the unit. Start by looking at the contractor.

A good contractor will not sell you junk equipment.

The best equipment not installed properly will never work properly.

Get and check references from any contractor. Make sure they do a
formal load calculation and check not only for the total cooling required,
but also the ductwork required. Make sure they have workman's comp paid
current.

Let them pick the brand of equipment that they know is good and familiar
working with.

I did a google and it doesn't tell me what is important to inquire about
when shopping.

How long in business. Talk to a couple previous customers.
See if the tech is polite, or uses crude language.

Chris, any day of the year, the offer stands.

Come on down, and let me tell you what I think of you, and we film the
entire thing, as you and I install two units...

I bet you any ****ing amount of money, you will lose out and wont have the
linesets in place correctly, buy the time we have the superheat
correct...and the blower door test passed.

Get it?

You are not in the trade, you dont have a clue what it takes for a good
install.

King, Whenever I antisipate spending a chuck of money, I usually consult
"Consumer Reports". Their product reviews point out what to look for as
well as what is recommended.

Crude language?
Maybe if you find that offensive you don't want the guy in your house but if
the F word makes my repairman happy and he does good work he can say it all
day long. I'll even say it with him.
my 2 cents

Stormin is on a crusade. Hes got a child molesting pedophile that also
claims to be a tech with him on this one. They are out to bring back
morality to the trade.
Problem is, Stormy isnt IN the trade. Hes a locksmith giving advice out
about mechanical equipment.
By his own admission, hes put parts on customers units that are not needed,
because he happened to have something he cant return (hint, legitimate
contractors can always return parts) to his "supplier" and several people in
the NY area claim that he was on a local appliance company sting on one of
the news stations there, and did all he could to actually damage a perfectly
good motor so he could sell one....THEN he preaches morals and crap.

He does not think that being short, and to the point on the internet is a
good thing. He thinks that if he sugar coats things, everyone will be
happy...well, hes got some learning to do. If I offend a customer by telling
them for the 5th time, Look, its broke, ok? No amount of bitching, whining,
griping or asking me another damn time if its broke will fix it.
Well..if the word damn offends, tough. Whats said on Usenet, and whats said
in person, different animals together. Chris just seems to think that no one
has EVER been screwed over by a slick talking, polite, and sugary sweet
salesman...

BTW...here is some good advice from a company owner:

IF you are shopping for a new AC system, or the like, and you get a saleman
that in a round about way says: Here is the deal, you need this, this is
why, here are the specs on the new unit, (manual J, D, etc) and here is the
price. Its 105F out, the guys are swamped, its going to be a couple of days
before we can get here to do it, and if you dont like the price, there are
500 others in the book...call one...you actually stand a better chance in a
large area (smaller rual areas will vary) of getting a complete and accurate
installation..believe it or not.
IF on the other hand, you get a wimpy guy thats agreeing to EVERYTHING you
say, seems to be giving the world to you to get the sale, and just seems
overtly nice....he, or the company he owns, or works for, or whatever is
probably about to go under, and chances are that hes dying for another sale.
Those with work, and enough work to keep going, know that its nice to get
another customer, but we aint gonna cut corners, we are not gonna give you
the world to get the job, and we understand that while you are hot, (or
cold, depending on season) that if you want quality work, you are gonna have
to wait on us, and bottom line, as I have told more than one..if you cant
wait, call some more...your better companies will be busy. Thats a fact.
Your hacks, and shortcut guys will be ready to jump on it right then.
SOMETIMES we get a simple swapout or something and can come back the next
day, but its rare as hell that we can say...ok..you need a complete system,
and by 6pm today you will have it.
If the guys sugary, he needs rinsing off, and he needs to do it someplace
else.
