Being overrun by chipmunks....
They are all over our house and yard. I'd appreciate any specifics on
how to prevent, control or otherwise get rid of them! Thanks in advance! /fred.r |

But I see them all over, even running across the road as I drive along. Our cat is old and lazy but seems to snack on one every few days. But they are still there. I came from Pittsburgh, PA and we had lots of chipmunks there but we didn't have squirrels. I was amazed to see squirrels but no chipmunks when I arrived in the Boston area in 1959. Now we have both in Boston. But that feline won't even think about squirrels. |

Humane: Buy traps and then release. Perhaps you could release them at someone else's house you don't like :)

Fred, this is what someone else posted in the forum, it might work in your situation.
I put up a couple big birdhouses with 3-inch holes. This attracts owls and kestrels to the area, something which squirrels & chipmunks don't find very amusing. The squirrels will use boxes with 2-2.5 inch diameter holes, but around here they stay away from the 3-inch ones. Birdhouses with 2-inch diameters must have a steel-plate around the hole or else the squirrel will widen it to their own dimensions (usually pregnancy dimensions, meaning more squirrels). Animals seem to know that a hole that's too big is a sign something bigger can come in after them. In fact, I've been working on building a barred owl nestbox, but that is a biggie (2.5 feet deep and 12"x12" base with a 7" entrance hole). I would just barely have enough wood. To be honest, the pellet gun is what works best. Usually I get 30-40 a year, and there's always just as many to fill the void. With a squirrel it's less effective, but a properly sighted scope is very effective with chipmunks. Dan Quote:

All I am saying is that it might be a little better then shootin' them or perhaps poisoning them. I guess you are troubled by the word "humane" I will take it back and say, option 1. I've heard aftershave left in open areas, attics crawl spaces scare off large rodents like squirrels and chip monks. Whats the worse, a couple bucks fro some cheap aftershave. option 3. Buy a cat Excellent idea, but not a cat. I have two, they are dumb. Invite other preditors like owls and hawks to your area. Build nesting boxes, etc. All sounds like a good weekend project.
