Default Options for transitioning from a doorway down to a Patio?

Hello,

We are in the early stages of the planning and design process of replacing
an existing nasty high maintenance 400 square foot wooded deck with a patio
which will either be brick or Flagstone or similar. The thinking is that
the new patio will be approx. 18' x 20'.

We are currently at the stage of the transition from the backdoor to the
patio. We do not want the traditional 3 wooden steps down to the patio and
in fact, may want about a 4' landing prior to the ground level patio. All I
can think of is a raised brick type terrace to serve as this function. My
concern is though if we go with a flagstone type patio, then the brick
transition may look out-of-place.

Anyone with experience or suggestions?
