Deer Problem
 

How can I keep the deer from destroying my landscape? Are there any methods
known to man that will keep them out of my plants? Are there some nice
looking plants that they will not eat? Any rational ideas would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks!

You can reduce the possibility of damage but I think deer will find a way in
if they want something tasty.

Run an electric fence at the property perimeter.
Keep dogs loose in the yard.

Don't know about non-tasty plants. Consult with the county ag extension
specialist.

Thank God for our right to bear arms. Maybe the deer problem is what those
old buggers had in mind when the established those rights. Establish
yourself as a "farm" - no one questions it around here. That allows you to
shoot bambi all year long to protect your "crops". I use a shotgun with
slugs in close quarters or a lever action 30-30 when I have room.

Friend of mine had problems with deer and went out and bought a radar
sprinkling system. It worked and got rid of all the deer.Best thing to do is
check with a hardware store to get one.

Sorry, guns are not an option. I live in the city limits.

Hmmmm.....I'm fond of gadgets. I've never heard of this one. I'll check it

Always worked for me on whitetails. Worked so-so on rabbits.

I have to deal with deer alot and very little works on a permanent basis.
Sprays wear off with time or rain and planting deer resistant plants will
only work so well also. The young deer will tast everything once it seems.
The one thing that I have found that works really well is a double fence.

It turns out deer have very bad eye sight and they can not tell
depth perception very well at all. If you were to put up a fence that was
3.5 feet tall and another fence that was 4 feet tall seperated by 3 or 4
feet, this would be rather effective. Granted that this is *not* deer
proof and that one or two deer will learn to jump it, but the other fourty
will not.

I've had people argue that deer can jump 12+ feet over a fence and this is
true, but for them to gage the distance of two fences with a space between
is very hard. I've seen up close and personal what the deer will do when
confronted with this type of fence. I've installed this fence on a clients
property of lummi island where the deer are thick and plenty. In three
years we've had about 3 deer a year on the property and most of them
climbed the cliff to get there. We have watched the deer attempt to jump
the fences and it's a bit humorous.

If a fence it not cost effective for you then your only other option is to
get a dog that listens well to you and like to chase deer 80)

See what the agent thinks of Hot Pepper Wax,
http://www.hotpepperwax.com/. The mfg recommends it only for rabbits and
squirrels but http://www.mydeergarden.com/ seems to think it's okay for
deer, too. http://www.mydeergarden.com/Deterren...pepper_wax.htm has
some home brews at the bottom, too. A combination of methods will probably
be the way to go. Think Integrated Pest Management. Good luck.

My six foot fence stops them from coming into the garden area. I'm sure
they can jump higher - if chased - but to get to something without being
chased they haven't been that energetic by me.

Go to your local barbershop and collect the hair and spread it around
the yard. There are sprays that you can put on plants that will give
a bad taste. I think these last for about 4 weeks and then have to be
redone. Hair would do the trick though.
