Wood Chipper Repair - Where?
 

Hi Folks,

We received a used Troybuilt wood chipper as a gift six or so years ago.
When I tried to start it, it wouldn't.

A local small gas engine repair place in Cary quoted me nearly $300 to
fix it. That's over 1/3 of what the machine cost new.

I tried a shotgun approach instead, and replaced about $80 worth of
parts including the carburetor. It ran. Woohoo!

Unfortunately, I stored the machine under the house and forgot about it
for four years. I took it out last year and tried to start it - no
luck. There's spark, but no catch. It drips gasoline from a tiny hole
on the bottom of the carburetor.

Yes, I screwed up.

So what's a decent place to take this thing and get it fixed, that won't
charge an entire boat payment? Somewhere near Cary & Raleigh would work
best.

Stephens Ace Hardware in Fuquay was an authorized Troybilt service center. I
haven't looked lately to see if there are now others in the area. MTD
purchased Troybilt a year or two ago, so those places may now work on
Troybilt.

However, since it sounds like it's your engine, most any place should be able
to work on it. I seem to recall that most Troybilt machines used either
Tecumseh or Kohler engines.

I added a fuel shut off valve on my 20+ year old Troybilt tiller that I only
use every couple of months. Instead of turning it off, I switch off the fuel
supply and let it run until it dies. That way, there is no gas left in the
carb. By using the fuel shut off valve, it will start on the first or second
pull the next time I use it.

I can't guess what they'll charge, obviously, but I've always
been entirely pleased with a small-engine/yard machine repair
place behind Burke Brothers Hardware (sorry, I don't know the
name or phone number) on Hillsborough very near the State
Fairgrounds. They're not always ultra-fast, particularly at
this time of year, but the service has always been excellent
and the prices fair. Park at the back of the Burke Bro's
lot and walk in the chain-fenced area--the shop is nestled
up against the back of Burke Brothers.

Burke Brothers Hardware near the fairgrounds has an independent repair
person on site. Cary Mower and Saw fixed my chipper for $60 to clean
the carb. Stevens Hardware in Fuquay also. I have had all do work and
felt like I was treated fairly.

I would be curious to know where you took yours.

I have to admit, we moved somewhat glacially on this repair. I just got
the machine back last week. I took it to Precision Outdoor Power
Equipment, the independent guy near the fairgrounds. It totalled $120,
including deposit. They did a carburator rebuild, replaced the float,
and some general maintenance on the neglected beast.

The place I took it five years ago was Cary Mower & Saw. They wanted
close to $300 for very similar work. I had more spare time back then,
and replaced the carb, air cleaner, plug and muffler myself for about $85.

With the way my work schedule is these days, I'll be lucky if I get to
try it out next month. I have a huge pile of old sticks to tear up :p

I am partial the liquid stuff. Every professional seems to use some
form of it. I spray perimiter inside and out, attic, kitchen and
baths.It keeps roaches and ants at bay. I used to spray twice a year,
but now I spray when I see some beasties so it averages more like 1.5
times a year.

Talk about a brain fart. How the heck did I mistake this for the Ant
post. Probably I have consumed too much Aspartame.
