Our roses here in Las Vegas are the healthiest looking and best producing
roses that I've ever had. They slowed down last summer, but took off in the
fall with a vengeance that only stopped for a few weeks in January. Now,
they're again putting on new growth and have roses and buds all over the
place.

What concerns me is that the leaves of all the bushes are coated with a
clear resin-like substance that makes them sparkle in the sunlight. I first
thought I had aphids that were damaging the leaves, but cannot see any,
checking both the upper and lower surfaces of the leaves. All the bushes
have this coating- like a candy glaze on the upper leaf surface.

The leaves themselves show no sign of withering or yellowing.

Could this be a normal condition for a rose? Remember, they don't get rain
on the leaves except for 3-4 rains a year! All watering is done by drip,
and the only "baths" the roses get is from Miracle Grow for Roses, which I
apply to the foliage every month or when I sprinkle them with the hose to
wash off dust..

A test case might be those little roses sold in grocery stores at
Mother's Day. I imagine they are greenhouse grown with no exposure to
overhead water or weather. Do they have a waxy sheen? Could it be a
pollutant in the air? A difference in the quality of light in a place of
no humidity which alters the appearance of surfaces from those of
memory? Dunno. An interesting question.

Yesterday at work I was looking at the newly leafed out roses after a
week of cold rain. Each leaf was glossy and perfect with an iridescent
sheen. Maybe we just don't see what has always been in front of our
noses did we only look.
