This "volunteer" is growing in a friend's yard. What is it? Pumpkin?

It's some variety of squash.
Could be pumpkin, could be butternut.
If it's vining, it'll probably be good for pies.

It's a curcubit of some kind. Be patient, the fruit will speak its
identity. If some one threw away a cucumber, this could be its
descendant.

The 'sterile' flowers you see are the male ones. Remember the birds and
bees story? Right, they make the pollen for the lady flowers who make
the babies (plant embryos).
