Peas.

Last years journal said we planted them around the 13th of
January and they didn't do squat till the 4th week. So, we
are getting ready for pea planting. 75% of them never make
it to the pot on the stove, They are enjoyed fresh out of
the pod.

I am so glad you started this thread! I have some comments and a
couple of questions.

Right now, I'm watching all my bulbs begin to bloom early. I'm assuming
everyone else is having the same problem. I planted a lot of narcissus
and daffodils, among others. Do you think they'll bloom again in the
spring?? Meanwhile, I still have a bag of tulips I haven't planted.
I'll probably do that soon.

Also, I planted a fig tree last spring and it sprouted up really fast.
It grew about 5 pretty hard figs that never matured correctly. Then, in
the fall, it dropped all its leaves. It's just one tall sprig. No
offshoot limbs to speak of. I would guess it's about 5 1/2 feet tall.
Any tips? I'm scared to prune it back.

On the days where it's warmer and going to stay that way a few
more days, I'm moving monkey grass from a bed now shaded by a picket
fence to an area where the dog likes to piddle.

Once the wife and I get the upstairs unpacked and put away,
I'll put some time into doing some raised beds for veggies
in the spring. I need to find a source for plastic lumber so I can
figure the price of doing the beds with cinder blocks or with
plastic lumber.

I also need to find a tree removal service that can
handle removing a few monster pine trees that are entirely
too close to the house and the well.

After that need to move the driveway a bit so I have room to put
in a foundation for a greenhouse.

As for planting, planning an asparagus bed now that the wife
has experienced asparagus not from a can.
We want to negotiate with our neighbor to see if she'll let us
grow some pumpkins on her property.
Other veggies, probably beans and cukes and if we finish in time
some salad greens.

Thanks for the fig tree advice! I really needed it. I'm a pretty
hands-off gardener. I make sure the soil is good and plants get plenty
of water and then let nature take its course. I'll see how my fig tree
grows back this spring and make pruning decisions later.

Well, farmtek sells it, but I don't want to have it shipped.
Lowes and Home Despot sells the material for decking, but I think
I want something a bit thicker.
Farmtek also sells kits to do raised beds with what is essentially
pond liner. I may try one of those for hosta seedlings in the back
yard.

has the lowest price for doing something like this with
2x6x12' sticks for $42.25 each.
They also sell polyethylene sheeting which could be used with
a mixture of regular lumber and plastic lumber for a hybrid approach.

Expensive. Most such lumber is used for decks. It may not hold up as
well for in ground use.

Chris you know how long some of my concrete blocks have been there.
They are probably good for another 25-50 years. Plus you may be able to
find used blocks.

a 4x8x16 concrete block is very versatile.
