Default Dry ground and falling trees

Not exactly a garden question, but...

I have a large, apparently healthy, pine tree that has begun to lean
precariously. The ground around the base is bulging and it looks like
the whole tree is about to come up by the roots.

Does dry ground contribute to this, or is it just a fluke? I usually
associate uprooting trees with saturated wet ground.
