New sprayer
 

I have been fighting sweet gums and other saplings as well as
Jessamine, trumpet creeper, poison ivy, and honey suckle on some land
I own in SC. It was in pines and I had them thinned about 8 years ago
and lost some to to wind and ice and possibly to disease and have
never cleaned them. Every third row was removed so I am starting to
mow between them and kill the saplings. Last month I borrowed my
brother's tractor and bush hog to clear most of the remaining cleared
rows.

I have also been fighting with roundup for a couple years, but a 3
gallon hand pump sprayer or a 4 gallon backpack sprayer is kind of
like peeing on a forest fire. So I just bought an 8 gallon electric
pump sprayer from AgriSupply to try out this month. Also got a 2.5
gallon jug of roundup and a gallon of Trimec broadleaf herbicide.
Will start using it on the next trip back.

Some to these remaining gum "saplings" are 6 inches in diameter. Will
attack them with ditchbank axe, chainsaw or drilling holes in them and
putting in roundup diluted 5:1 instead of the normal 40:1.

I will post a product update later this year.

Use that concentration and you'll kill what you don't want to kill. Just be carefull because it will wash down to the roots.

This sprayer is really nice, but it has a couple of irksome
features.

The 15 foot hose is a heavy duty coiled plastic. A lot like those
coiled hoses you can buy for a faucet. It is attached low and on the
bottom near the wheels do it can get caught on roots if you are not
careful if you are walking and spraying.

The intake inside the tank is away from the wheels so you cannot roll
it and get out the last half gallon but it has to be flat or even
tipped to get most of the solution out.

It puts out a nice spray and though a little awkward to walk and
spray, one can easily get a 10 foot width of spray and cover a lot of
ground - which is what I wanted. It works best for me to walk
backwards and spray. That way I am not walking into the spray.

The battery and pump are covered and I have not bothered to remove the
plastic panels. It has a small jack to accept the charger. Ran an 8
gallon tank full . I think you could spray all day on one charge.
That would probably be 10-20 tankfulls.

The wheels are about an inch wide and 8 inches diameter so it rolls
well on rougher terrain. At 139$ it is not cheap, but a good SOLO
backpack sprayer is 80$ and the Agrisupply backpack is 40$.

Tackling Bahia grass and lots of poison ivy next trip to SC.
