Garden report
 

We are harvesting goodly quantities of tomatoes, squash, basil, and
cucumbers. Lots of cucumbers! Eggplants exhibit healthy foliage but
only modest production so far.

Dry and hot weather has made it necessary to irrigate with the garden hose.

Insect damage has been less severe than in past years. Our primary
method of pest control is hand-picking. Some pepper plants are stunted
but survive. Tomato foliage shows signs of blight but none have died.

I have a south-facing deck that gets brutal sun. If I miss the
watering schedule by even a few hours, things wilt.

What with the cost of the plants, potting soil, and water, I may just
skip it altogether next year.

Getting green beans, cucumbers, squash, one eggplant. Had enough
beets to pickle some. Found we like them peeled and quartered and
baked in the oven. Dug potatoes couple weeks ago 7-10 pounds these
were blue potatoes
that when cooked look like faded beets. Should be able to pick peas
tomorrow and have a few okra pods so far.

plenty of green tomatoes, but not a ripe one yet. Planted Craig
Lehoulier's Dwarf Mr. Snow which is a white tomato and it has some
golf ball sized ones. Lost a couple egg plants and peppers and one
better boy tomato. planted another better boy and a couple peppers.
Found one volunteer tomato in the asparagus bed and planted it where
one of the eggplants had been. I always like to plant one volunteer
plant cause it is like tossing the dice and you often get a great
tasting tomato, you just never know what exact flavor or size it will
be. Getting Basil, oregano, thyme, and rosemary as well.

I have tried using some scrap lumber to make raised boxes for some
tomatoes and peppers. The theory is the raised area warms faster and
the plants will grow better. Down side is more frequent watering. I
will try to shoot a few photos and put on Flickr.

Have had enough cucumbers to make pickles twice. I have put yellow
squash in the freezer as well as zuccini. I have started my second
crop in the greenhouse. Sadly the weeds have taken over because we
were out of town for a bit. Seems overwhelming now. I am so good about
that in the spring!

This time of year weeds seem to grow as fast as Kudzu. Mulching with
leaves helps but some will still push through the leaves.

My wife found two Asian cucumbers that were yellow for the first inch
or so from the stem and then their normal lighter green. They are
beside the squash and are thinking they cross polinated. We had that
one year with gourds and butternut squash where the squash has some
gourd like shapes, and the gourds had squash shapes - no color trades
though.
