If you do get the squirrel proof feeder, be sure to "secure" the lid latch with
a twist-tie or similar wire. Our racoon population figured out how to open our squirrel proof feeder, then proceed to gorge themselves as well as scoop the seeds out onto the ground for the squirrels. I've actually seen the racoons sitting inside the feeder stuffing themselves. Smart critters... |

They cost about 20 bucks and come in varying diameters. thanks - jim -- Wes Dukes (wdukesNOatSPAMpoboxdotcom) |

My squirrel-proof feeder was no match for a racoon, it's a mangled metal
mess. Eileen Patskywriter wrote: get a squirrel-proof feeder ... ? mine definitely thwarts squirrels' efforts--maybe it would work with raccoons, too ... ? pat |

I split and wrapped a piece of plastic pipe around the pole. The raccoons
can't get a grip and just slide down it. If u don't have pipe get one of those plastic covers for a shower curtain rod. They are cheap and work great. Or get one of those protectors the phone company wraps around their cables that go on the guide lines. Any smooth piece of plastic will work.......But soft rubber lets them grip on and thus getting to the feeders....... Hope this helps someone.... We were told to try mixing capsacin (the element in hot peppers that make them hot) in with our bird seed to discourage squirrels. We did some research on it first and found that it does appear to be true that birds do no have receptors for capsacin so they do not notice it. However, the squirrels sure do as I bet raccoons would also. We haven't been using pure capsacin just mixing powdered cayenne in with the bird seed. Susan shsimko at duke dot edu |

many thanks for all the good suggestions. we are currently using a squirrel
proof feeder but ole Rocky sits on top and with his long arms he can scoop out the feed without tipping the door shut. cheers, jim "Susan H.
