Roadside roses.....

This is the time of year I see roses blooming by the side of the road in
various "almost" wild settings.

I wonder....

are there creeping rose varieties that make a good groundcover......i.e. a
cover capable of suppressing grass growth?

Are there local sources for such?

i have the roses you're referring to, growing wild in the ditch in front of
our property (i don't live in a subdivision obviously ;). they only bloom
once a year, which wouldn't please many people who would like constant
color. they are not dense, so would not supress grass (if you look where
they grow, there's usually massive grass and wildflowers, etc. they send
out very long canes, and will grow up into shrubs and trees with low
branches and cascade down. very beautiful!

if i were to want a rose that behaved like you describe, i would get either
'red cascade' or 'snow carpet' both of which are available at niche gardens:
