Long time resident of this ng, Michael Waldovogel (sorry Mike, at
least it's close) was on the channel 5 news tonight talking about
spiders. It was fun to say, "I know him!" It was also gross to
see that HUGE spider they kept showing (omg, I would move out if
that one came visiting!). Congrats on appearing intelligent
despite the fact that they only showed about 1 minute of the
interview!

I know a another potential star related to this newsgroup. My wife Amy will
appear on Jeopardy 10-6. I know some of you guys have to be Jeopardy fans.
See if I'll get that new tiller I've been wanting.

WHAT a summer this has been for spiders! CRAZY! They are taking over the
proch - but we adore spiders and can't bear to discourage them. So many
different kinds I've never seen before! There was one earlier in the summer
which was teeny with a little spot of glowing metallic gold color -
beautiful!

Is there a good key to spiders in NC?

WOW Baine, that's neat! I'll be sure to watch. I know it's off
topic yet I'm curious to hear about the process one goes through
to get onto Jeopardy... if you have time.

You apply online and then they have regional contestant interviews. Whe
went to Atlanta where they give you a test with similar questions that you
might find on jeopardy. Those who pass the test, in Amy's case only 10 out
of 90+, have a mock Jeopardy contest. They pick 400 people out of 25,000
for this years show.

We went to LA a couple of months ago where they tape the shows. The rest is
history.

If they showed any longer segment, I'd sound less intelligent
and more like my usual self.

Regarding the post about ID books for spiders - I use two
references. An actual identification key is the book "How to
Know the Spiders" by Benjamin Kaston. It is/was a spiral bound
softback last published in 1978, but it is still available.
It's not specifically about NC, but it's very good. The second
reference is the Golden Guide Series book - 'Spiders and Their
Kin' by Herbert Levi. Your can't beat a good picture-based
guide book. We NCSUers prefer to look picture books and leave
the fancy reading to the folks at that college over in Chapel
Hill.

I just love the marbled orb-weavers. They make a web in my kitchen
window and I can watch them weaving while I do the dishes.
But the other morning I got up, and one had come under the screen door
near my bedroom and made a web (which I ran into) across my bedroom
doorway! I got my trusty aquarium net and took her back outside.
They are heavy! She squirmed all the way downstairs and out. Those
wolf tunnel spiders are the ones I can do without.
