my neighbors GRRRRRRRRRR!

My neighbors just painted their house white and cut down every
single tree in their backyard. Yes, I know it's their right. I
fail to see why one buys a heavily wooded lot and then removes
all of the trees! Anyway, his lot is kitty-corner to mine. I'd
like to install a screen of evergreen trees, however, I have
several medium-sized hardwoods in that corner. I saved a very
nice list of shaded plants that Heidi posted a couple of years
ago yet she stopped at bushes. Anyone care to post a list of
trees that will grow in shade, under large hardwoods? In return,
I'll save it and post it if someone else needs it in the future.
Thanks all.

I belong to the National Arbor Day Foundation and you can use their site
to find out the best tree's for this area and the ones best for shade as
well.
http://www.arborday.org
The best part is for 10 dollars a year, you get ten free trees and you can
also get any others you would like at a discount.
I joined last year and this year will be planting my trees in their
permanent homes. I had large potted them to start so I could have time to
decide where they would go.
This year I will be getting a nice living fence so I can enjoy my natural
habitat I am working on.

Beautyberry, Sweet Betsy, Aucuba japonica, Camellia, Cleyera japonica,
Hydrangea, Fatsia japonica, Leucothoe fontansiana, Mahonia bealei, Nandina
domestica, Pieris japonica, Rhododendron, Sarcococca confusa, Japanese
Maples, Lilac Bush, etc. are some of a few you could plant.

There is a coral bark japanese maple that is more upright and similar to a
regular maple except that the bark is absolutely gorgeous in the winter
(bright red). I don't know of too many trees that thrive in shade. Many
will tolerate shade, but won't be at their very best. Hopefully, some of
these will help. Beautyberry can get quite tall and the berries are
gorgeous. Try google and see what they look like in the fall.

Good luck,

Penny

Maybe they are solar-power freaks like my husband :) When we bought our
place we loved the fact that it was one of the most shaded homes ont he
street; now Bill looks enviously at the bare lawns of some of our
neighbors :) Fortunately he grew up in Kansas, so cutting down trees still
seems something of a sacrilege to him ;-)

Nope, I'd be a little less peeved if this was the case. He just
wants grass.

Thanks all for the ideas. I absolutely cannot wait to start
planting! We started tearing out more of the old stuff (mostly
boxwoods) yesterday. It's actually kind of nice to have sore
hamstrings today!

Get an auger for that new tractor...it will help tremendously in digging holes
for the new trees and shrubs.

Weird, but it takes all kinds (or so I've heard). For instance...
