I purchased four tubes of seedlings on ebay from the Orchid Seedbank.
Three out of the four will go into sphagnum when I deflask them, but
I'm concerned that might not be a good choice for the Laelia alvaroana
which is a rupiculous Laelia. Any suggestions?

It can be. Back in December, we shot some pics for the website on
how to de-flask seedlings using (ta-dah!) L. alvaroana. See:

It's now verging on April, and the seedlings are doing fine. The
trick, of course, is they must be kept dry. If your greenhouse is moist
and humid, you might find a place near the fans so they'll dry off faster,
and plaque the seedlings (with or without sphagnum packing on the roots).

They do have amazing abilities to withstand drought; keeping them
dry for two weeks at a time in 20% relative humidity doesn't make them
grow, but it doesn't kill them, either.

Cool. I had seen the pics but didn't realize they were L. alvaroana.
Into sphagnum they will go. They'll be inside under lights with good
air movement, so I'll be able to control the moisture easily enough.

The tubes you've been offering on ebay are great for hobby growers.
Even a small flask has way too many seedlings for me.

Aaron, my compliments on very clear, practical instructions. Good going!
Plus, I share your opinions on rat dogs; I can barely understand someone
wanting to own one, but the idea of propagating them reaches beyond my range
of comprehension. I would never do anything to hurt one, however. Have you
seen the cat in a bottle site, BTW? Right up your alley... ;-)

I still have a problem with "rat dogs" myself, and have always had larger
ones - German Shepherd/Lab cross, Irish Setters, Border Collies - although
my daughter got a miniature longhaired dachshund about 18 months ago, and he
has no concept that he even might be small, and is one of the nicest dogs
I've ever been around.

He terrorizes the border collie, grabbing his tail so that he can "crack the
whip" when the BC runs, but id friends with the cats, too (1. they're bigger
than he is, and 2. he doesn't herd them like the BC).

As in "Bonsai Kittens" (http://www.bonsaikitten.com/)? The site
generated much protest a few years back from folks who failed to
understand that it's a spoof.

My WYSIWYG web-slinging program (NetObjects Fusion- have pity on
me) doesn't "get me" what I see. So that's why there are weird things like
the link to the next page between photos and other stuff.

I once rescued a dachshund on a busy street one day in August here
in the Phoenix area, a story I shall relate to the Teeming Millions
someday that r.g.o. gets really, really slow. I was able to find the
owner, who gushed wish praise for my actions. All I could think was, "You
managed to lose a dachshund?" It had run away from them at the vet clinic.
How in the *world* can you get outrun by a dachshund hopped up on
barbituates?

The world continues to confuse me.

Sewer? (Sorry, just watching "Big trouble in Little China" with Kurt
Russell, and something like that *has* to hit my mind!)
