Made it to the flea market today and found the orchid lady.
I've been visiting her stall for the last four years that
I've been here and talked to her and her husband a few times.
They own a nursery but closed it to the public quite a few
years ago due to insurance costs so, now, she only sells at
the flea market or at shows or other venues like fairs, craft/
flower fairs, etc. I have bought a couple of smaller orchids
from her previously and a couple of stephanotis vines but
have only previously enviously eyed (what I consider) their
best plants, grammatophyllums. Today, I broke down and bought
one. It has two biiiig pseudobulbs, four smaller ones and new
growth popping out on the side but it has a 2 1/2 foot tall
spike covered with buds and the lower ones are just opening.

I'm happy.

Tracey
who won't tell the price because I know there are tons of
rotten tomatoes waiting for me....

Darn. It's a Gram Scriptum x sib, according to the tag.

Yeah, they're pretty big, aren't they? They ones they've had before
were much larger and would have 3 or more spikes at once on them but
because of the price (and space issues), I always passed on them.
This one is in a 1 gallon bucket (I think. It doesn't seem as big
as the 2 gallon buckets roses come in) and was half the price of
the larger ones I've seen them selling. I also have quite a bit
of room due to my total neglect of my yard for the last couple
of years so no space issues at the moment. But, I'm thinking of
taking a drive to H&R Nurseries so that could change. :P

Tracey,

They are magnificant specimens. Several years ago the best flower in our
show was a Gram. scriptum with about 15 spikes and thousands of flowers. It
was breathtaking and a huge plant.

Sounds like you can grow yours outdoors so space should not be an issue.

I have one that I have to move in and out of the greenhouse and has not
bloomed yet but I have hopes since it has three big p-bulbs and two new
growths coming. I think I got it from Carmella.

Good growing,
Gene

Yes. At the moment, we live on the side of a mountain on the leeward
side of Oahu. I think the last time I posted here, I was living on
the side of a mountain on the windward side. Hehe. Our yard is very
small but we don't have toddlers so no real need for anything in our
yard but plants and plant shelves.

I have four trees sorta kinda surrounding our itty bitty yard but
they're all tall enough that the yard is bright but only occasional
straight sun makes it through their leaves. Seems to be pretty
good so far.
