Nicotine solution for bugs?
 

I heard about a mixture that some use on roses for aphids. I'm not saying I
will try this, but I am curious.

The formula: 1 lb. loose tobacco; 7 pints water; 1 pint alcohol. Let steeo
for a week or so, until the water has turned the color of tea. They advise
using a capful of mineral spirits to deter kids (or idiots) from drinking
the stuff. Strain out the tobacco and spray.

If it does work, would it kill anything besides aphids, and would it be safe
on orchids? I'm thinking tobacco mosaic virus here, even though the tobacco
has been cured.

As I said, just curious. It sounds noxious to me.

Do not do it. It is extremely toxic to you, as well as bugs, plus TMV
is not killed by curing.

by the stuff people suggest.

I only wanted to chime in and add that, when reminiscing with
oldtimers, it is considered courtesy to roll your eyes and say, "Oh, MAN.
Remember Black Leaf 40? Hoo boy!" when the subject of banned pesticides
comes up.

My grandmother soaked all of my
grandfather's cigar butts into a large jar out on the back porch
she used the mixture to spray her orchids. this was in the early
'40's. it definitely killed aphids.

there is an artificial nicotine on the market that works. It is
relatively safe.

Yep, nicotine sulfate is readily absorbed through the skin, and a
little bit goes a very long way.

And when you stop spraying the nicotine on the orchids then you have to put
the plants on the nicotine patch. The orchids get very bitchy during the
time they quit the stuff.

Thanks for the "oldtimers" label, Aaron. Today being my birthday, I'm
getting it from all sides. I guess it's time to face the facts when my
moving around arouses calls from the neighbors about illegal fireworks and
the number of artificial joints is rapidly approaching the number of real
ones. If you talk loud enough and the hearing aid is turned up, I can hear
you. And if the meds are working I'll be able to formulate some sort of
coherent response. I think I'll just go celebrate by myself and buy a couple
of orchids.

Thanks for the heads up on Natriphene. I was never impressed with the
stuff. The next time the county is collecting surplus chemicals I'll make
sure to turn in what I have left. Another good one to turn in is the old
bags of Kocide 101.

With Dithio off the market, the recommended substitute is nicotine. While I
have been nursing along my finial cans of Dithio, I have talked to the
manufacture, extension rep and other growers about using nicotine fumigants.
I expect this is the route I will go if I get into a thrip war this summer.
Smallest size can treats 10,000 cu. ft. and requires a permit to buy.

As for making your own nicotine spray, does not seem like a real smart idea
to me.
