I heard there were some leagl/financial entanglement problems, which
when added to the facts they only do wholesale and that they're
incredibly rude on the phone, all I can say is: good luck!

I would like to get some information on the Orchid Zone (Is the owner still
Terry?)
How can I get contact information, I tried doing a web search but came up
empty handed, is there a mailing list? anyway that I can contact them?

Any information is greatly appreciated.

Actually I don't have contact information, I do all my business with
them through a friend. However, they will not sell retail, so I don't
know how usefull it will be to contact them. As far as I know, Terry is
still in charge. They ran into some big problems with a cross of
'sanderianum' that they sold thousands of. Of course it turned out to
be Prince Edward of York, still a nice plant but not sanderianum, and
certainly an honest mistake. Many people demanded their money back.
That might be the financial entanglement mentioned. Or maybe there is
something else I don't know about.

Rob

I purchased a couple of Orchid Zone Paphs from a local shop here in LA
(Orchid Fever) about a year ago. The tag only contained a plant number
instead of a name. I contacted them by e-mail :

They did respond to the e-mail with the names of my plants (although a
week later). Hope this helps.
Good Luck!

For the record, that is inexcusably unacceptable. Not Terry responding
to you (that was great), but the fact that the store didn't put the
names on the labels. I can understand that from a big lot store, but
one that specializes in orchids (Orchid Fever?) should know better. I'd
demand the name from them (even if you have already gotten it from
Terry). If they can't or won't comply it demonstrates that they don't
know (or don't care) what the heck they are doing, and I wouldn't spend
my money there any more.

Wow, that struck a nerve... Ouch.

Hi, Rob,

I purchased several phrags from G & B Nursery last year. They do a
booming business with Armstrong Nursery. Although the names of the
phrags were not on the tags, I also contacted Terry with their numbers.
Terry responded within a couple of days; therefore, perhaps, he was on
vacation.

Right, but my point was that the retail grower knows what the names are.
They ordered them, by number, from the wholesale list. Do they think
that everybody has to contact Terry directly to get the names of the
crosses? Did Terry sign up for that kind of abuse? He's a saint for
responding to anybody, and he is wasting valuable time (which I'd rather
he spent making crosses) because his customers (the resellers) are not
following the rules. An orchid specialist nursery should understand
that people want to know what they are buying. The reseller should put
the damn names in the pots. The end customer should have to call OZ,
ever.

Granted, a lot of plants are sold into the pot plant trade, where
florists and others don't particularly care what the plant is, only what
it looks like. That is fine. If a florist buys plants from OZ and
doesn't put the names in, I don't fault them. The people who I find
offensive are the ones who claim to be specialists in orchids. They
know better and are just being lazy. I will never do business with
someone like that.

I understood what you meant Rob. That the retail vendor was being sloppy,
not Terry Root.

Its a pet peeve of mine too, that retail vendors only sell orchids for the
buck, and make no attempt to pass along the 'pedigree' of what they are
selling. Theres a nursery here who gets plants from the local flower mart,
nice plants too. Then STRIPS all identification off the plant and puts on
their own froo-froo label saying "Cattleya" or 'Phalaenopsis'. And then has
the gall to sell them for 3x the price of any vendor in the orchid world
(Fuchs included). Imagine, conciously making a no-nami then selling it for
3x the price! Ack!

And stop grinding.

Hi Rob,

No other entanglements that I know of.

Orchid Zone made good on that mistake, but unfortunately a few retailers still
have not- retailers who got the benefit of the corrected orders from OZ in some
cases.

It is my understanding that Orchid Zone does not do retail just because of the
time and hassle involved. As an individual I used to be able to buy direct
"wholesale" since the quantities were lower- 100 plants or $1,000, but the bar
has been raised to where you have to blow a pretty big amount of money these
days.

The website is nowhere to be found I see, so all I can do is rely on reports
that wholesale these days is a minimum 10,000 plant order.

OZ supplies almost every major Paph retailer I know of to some degree- in many
cases totally, so given the enormous inventory they have I can understand why
they would avoid direct retail.

It should also be noted that direct retail would have the potential to compete
with their many large customer retailers. Hence there is little benefit in
doing any retail work.

Tom.

I would be REALLY tempted to walk in there, take a plant up to the cash
register, and as they start to ring it up, pull the tag and say "oh, it doesn't
have the full name" then walk away. :-)
Maybe do it once a week just to be a real pain!

I'm pretty sure that isn't accurate. Coincidentally, I haven't been
able to obtain a list recently, perhaps they know we don't buy that many
plants... But, I've seen plenty of OZ plants for sale in the last few
weeks that I know weren't purchased in 10,000 lots. These growers would
be lucky to have 2000 plants total. Perhaps 10,000 is a really good
price break point, but I doubt it is the minimum.

Indeed. And their business model is a good one, as far as I can
see. Tempts me to try a similar thing, except that my climate is
unsuitable, labor isn't exactly cheap here, and I lack a zillion acres
of growing space... *grin*
