I am planning to move soon from the San Francisco Bay area to either
Northern California or Southern Oregon, about 2500 Elev. The
temperatures there in winter are going to be about 20 degrees lower
than here. My question is, What is the approximate cost to heat a 10 X
12 greenhouse to a 50 degree minimum in winter? If any of you folks
live in those areas l would love to get more info from you. Thanks to
all, Ernie

The Weather service has a degree days of cooling and heating listing for
each of the weather stations they have on the Colorado site. I forget
now where I found the database 4 years ago, but there is a NOAA database
on line where you can put a zip code and a temperature minimum in and
get a total degree days of either heating or cooling from that
temperature.

I know that the Charley's Greenhouses folks are in that area, so they
should have a pretty good idea. The glazing (covering) on the greenhouse
makes a big difference in the heating. The surface area of my glass
house is 25% the size of my double poly house and it takes about twice
the heat in the winter that the double poly one does. Most of the
greenhouse catalogs have formulas for determining how many BTU's of
heating or square feet of cooling you will need. If you like, give me
more details about the greenhouse, and I will run the calcs for you. I
think when I get awake today, I can find the database again.

cheers

I think the proper term is "heating degree days." If the original
inquirer were to have at it with Google, he could probably compare heating
degree days where he currently resides with those of where he is going.

Plus, www.wunderground.com has an excellent database of historial
data for temperature (among other factors) for different locations.
