Paph/Light Question
 

All,

We are not Paph heavy. But we do have a few, and would like to grow more of
them. They seem to be doing fairly well, but reblooming is something of a
problem. I've heard that Paphs need more light than the conventional wisdom
dictates.

We were growing them with the Phals, which get good but muted light, but I
don't think that's enough. What kind of light candle measure would you Paph
growers recommend? We have a shelf that gets dapple morning sun til about
1:00, or another area that gets heavier (still screened, of course)
afternoon sun from around 1:00 til maybe 6:00. Both have good light and air
circulation all day.

My inclination is toward the AM area. What think you?

What's ladyslipper.com have to say about light? It'll differ depending
on the kinds of paphs you grow. I have some strap leaf paphs (like
lowii, roths hybrids, and spicerianum that I've grown hung high in the
GH, but right now they are on the bench with the catts. The parvis I
grow dimmer. Remember to repot paphs more frequently, too. I fail on
that account. Its been years since I repotted.

Depends. The strap-leaf types (i.e., roth, philippinense, etc.) can take
and require substantial light. In fac (kids, don't try this at home)
some roths and some phils have been found in full sun/nearly full sun in
situ. The mottled-leaf types (callosums, most vinis, etc.) don't handle
that much light well. So too for most of the parvis and brachys,
although I have heard some of those do well with a bit more light (i.e.,
emersonii, hangianum, that gruop). So I'd say maybe the mornings for the
lower-light ones and the afternoon light for the higher light types. But
remember, just like people, plants can burn easily and should be moved
to higher light gradually and carefully.

Ugg, me too. I have quite a few Paphs that really need to be repotted
but I never find the time.
Good advice on the light too. My Roth hybrids get more light than most
of the Catts and are growing well.

One other factor is that little seedlings seem to want much lower light than
the blooming sized plants (at least in my care, experience of others may
differ.)

Thanks, everyone. I'll have to look up the parentage of our hybrids. I don't
have a lot of background on these, and I don't know the categories at all.
It's time for deeper research, I guess.

I agree. We grow Phrags and Paphs in more light than many do.
Remember it is a balance of Water/light/food/and temp not just sun.
So with more light - more food.

I started repotting last month and can see a difference in the growth of my
orchids. The catasetums (usually repotted annually but sometimes I miss)
are putting out great roots. And the Catts! Well, some have double leads.
That is to say both 'eyes' are sprouting. I've never had that happen
before. I usually get 1 eye to grow, not both. I guess timing is
everything. Get them when the start to root and (dare I say it) feed and
water the things, LOL!! Heck even some of my vandaceous are growing new
roots. Guess I'll be continuing to pot this weekend. I'd better hurry,
stuff is growing fast around here.

Sure, be a sadist and bring up repotting! We've begun, and I guess I ought
not complain. Frank gets right into it with me, so we set up a little
assembly line. nd we only have around 250, nothing like so many of you guys.
