being picked up by the grower to attempt to rescusitate, but not getting
them back leaves the door wide open for pilferage. I suspect the growers
supplying your local HD have decided to find out for themselves how many
of their plants are just "not selling" and how many are walking out the
back door. Kenni

That's possible. What happens when they mark them down? Does the grower
still get their money?

I truly don't know. I never got that far in my conversations with folks
selling to big boxes. My *guess* is that they take part, but not all, of
the hit of the mark-down. Based on what I did find out, selling to the big
boxes was not something I could pursue. Requires enormous volume, a ready
source of really cheap labour, a willingness to cut corners on stuff like
plant hygiene, etc., etc. Kenni

1/2 dead flowers in the garden section.

Yes, they have told me the very same thing here in STL. BUUUT! I caught
up with one of the venders bringing orchids in and GUESS WHAT? Once the
vender scans the plants into Home Depot's system it belongs to Home
Depot, no rebates, no credits no nothing back if the plant dies.
Management at Home Depot is so paranoid that they believe if they
discount the plants and they die people will bring them back for a full
refund. So the plants go into the trash. That's why I take all my money
to LOWES where they discount their orchids and a lot of other things.

Grow well and bloom magnificently

Yes, Lowe's does discount them. I think I'll take my money there from now
on as well.

Hey Y'all!

I wear my tux every morning to go into the greenhouse to care for the
plants. What's wrong with that?

I do say it is quite warm in the middle of the day with that black jacket.
I was thinking about a white dinner jacket for the evenings.

I bought a bunch(40) cold damaged phal's from Rona/Revy for $4 a few months
ago to use as an experiment in an aeroponics system. So far i've only
lost two and some were doubles so I am about even on that score. But the
big suprise was when I repotted them. Four of the ones with tags were P
amabalis and two of them were v.Formosa. A real nice bonus since I usually
only grow species.

I was at a local HD today to get parts for the toilet repair. I stopped by
the garden section (like a moth to the light).

They had three fresh carts of phals, onc sweet sugar, and dendrobs. 6 inch
pot for 19.95. SAD looking plants from Florida. I wanted to make a sign
and tell the customers to drive out and see Al. At the same price they
would get something happy and healthy.

I'm sure the same is true in your area.

Good growing,
Gene

So,
what setup and what results on the aeroponics?

Default Aeroponics experiments...

I am using a modified " pipe dreams" system. It is a 6" pvc pipe with three
inch mesh baskets on 6" centers. Or is that 6'? i always get the foot and
inch symbel(sp?) confused. There is a mister between every other basket.
Works real nice as long as you keep the water cool(65F). I do approx
45sec on and aprrox 5 min off. I have done much longer off cycles with good
results as well but the tubes tend to heat up a lot in hot weather. Any
thing with a psuedobulb grows to insane size in no time. I had a Zygo
flower 4 times in one year and compleatly burst the pot. The biggest things
you have to watch for are the stem/rhizome getting to wet and salts
accumulating when water wicks up.

Should work great, but be careful of sharing plant pathogens....
