I checked out the orchids at HD in another town today and came home with 2
news ones. A clumping orchid called an "Epidendrum Hybrid", 1/2 price ($10)
as it was out of bloom and a $12 Phal with two spikes of buttercup yellow
flowers. :-))) They lowered the prices on their phals. They also had a
large selection of dens with really unusual flowers and colors. I was sooooo
tempted as they do so well for me.........sooooooo, sooooooo tempted.

Now I have to look up the care for it.

Also picked up the Ortho Guide to Orchids... I have a feeling my greenhouse
is going to me primarily orchids, cacti and succulents. ;-)

What are "cacti and succulents"? They sound to me like nuisances that take
up greenhouse space meant for more orchids.

Yes, I tried to tell Frank that Pecos Pete out on the patio was taking up
space better suited to a very large reed stem Epi or a Gramm.......He gave
me *that* look, LOL!

I almost laughed myself off my chair reading your message. :-D My first
love were cacti and succulents. I've had some for over 40 years.

When I need more space for orchids I'll move the cacti and succulents to the
smaller HFGH next to the Rion. :-)))

No, no, no no....... they take little care and most of them bloom every
year. They have beautiful flowers for weeks on end. My smaller GH may
become the C&S house. It's well insulated and the C&S don't need much heat
or humidity in winter.

That would be interesting. ) I doubt everyone here just grows orchids.
Aside from my orchids I also grow a small collection of geraniums and double
flowered impatiens.

I forgot to mention the tree peonies---about a dozen of them, and I'm
going to get a nice -P. rockii- hybrid this fall.

I have a calamodin orange tree that I've been growing for 39 years! Outside
in summer, indoor in winter. I got it as a kid and it's moved with me about
6 times.

I have a couple of weeping figs that are 30 years old. Same routine each
year and I hack them back to keep them small enough to bring indoors in the
fall.

I have two macadamia nut trees from nuts I picked up in Maui two years ago.
Something different that most people here in the east don't ever see. I
also have a small pulmeria that is doing well.

Begonias, african mask, bonsai weeping fig, three bougainvilla, angel
trumpet (yellow and Pink), pots and pots of pothos that came from a cutting
from a friend 25 years ago and it came from her parents before that. Its a
great weed to grow under the benches in the Greenhouse.

A 5 year old staghorn fern that I was looking at yesterday and thinking
about giving away because it's becoming a big plant.

Parlor Palm that was recued from an office 25 years ago when the plant
maintenance people were going to throw it away......in a pot with no
drainage (and probably no more dirt). Just keeps growing.

A couple dozen Christmas Cactus that grow with the pothos under the benches.
No problem, just groom them in the spring (they bloom twice a year
Thanksgiving and late spring).

Clivia that I divided in the spring into 5 big clumps (will give 4 clumps
away) got from a lady who I used to cut her grass 20 years ago.

Geraniums that winter in the unheated garage and come back every year. One
is over 12 years old and just keeps going and going....so much so I almost
hate the color now.

About 50 pots of Amaryllis....I get them each year after new years day at
75% off (yeah...I am cheap!) then keep them all summer. The next year they
bloom for me in May when I can take them outdoors and forget about them...no
fuss.

Bunches of Ferns and other stuff that probably won't fit back indoors this
year.

and people can't understand why I want a bigger greenhouse!

oh good golly, you live in a botanical garden. How big is that greenhouse
again? I am going to have come see it. Would it be better to come see the
place before or after you stuff it back inside the greenhouse?

And my neighbor thinks I'm a plant nut!!!!!!!!! Your plants must be a full
time job.

Begonias are in there......

The trees come into the house for the winter so they don't fill the GH. The
first year in the GH I was able to put a couple of them in there. I had two
more 6 feet tall fig trees that I took into work and left with a women in
there. Since then they closed that office and she took them home for the
summer. She says she will have to move her hubby into a corner to make room
for the plants. He needs less light!

The angel trumpets go dormant in the garage (with the banana tree if it
survives). Yeah...two car garage and in winter my SUV barely fits in there.

I don't know if there will be room in the GH this winter for me to go out
there and water.

I hate to see winter come!
