Water Temp In Greenhouse
 

I just put in a 9x12 greenhouse. Water is plumbed directly inside with a
dual carbon filtration system. I usually water with a spray wand, but it
seems like the ground water temps in January are going to be too cold to be
practical. How does everyone deal with water temps during the winter?

I am using two 55 gallon plastic barrels as a solar heat sink. I am thinking
about using one of these as my source for plant water, and would just refill
with ground water. Thoughts?

There's was a post on a GH forum that these solar heat sinks don't really
work. They cool off with the GH when the sun goes down. I use my 40g
plastic barrel just for watering the plants and refill it from the outside
hose twice a week. It doubles as a place to overwinter my pond's water
lettuce.

I once had a 55gal drum with a submersible pump in the g/h, that I used for
RO water storage.
The water was a bit warmer than the tap water. My pump packed in after
more than 5 years.
I decided not to replace it as I stopped the RO (too wasteful), however it
was useful to mix my 1/4
strength fertilizer in.

My rain water from the greenhouse roof comes inside into my storage tank
,which i then pump into a 240 litre barrel and then add my fertilizer.This
is near enough ambient with the greenhouse .I have never had any
problems.You could also place the storage barrel near your greenhouse heater
if you have one to help.

Temperature in water drawn from a well is pretty constant. It doesn't
change much with the seasonal temp variation. The water from it will
probably be within two to three degrees of the mean average air
temperature in you locality, unless your well and geography has some
pretty non-standard characteristics. Well water straight from the
pump is a cool and shocky temperature for tropcial plants even in the
summer. So your idea to hold the water in barrels until it's
temperature raises closer to the greenhouse air tempterature is a
good year-round practice.
