What to do when your orchid blooms?
 

Hi,

Can anyone tell me, do I need to do anything special now that my
orchid is blooming?
I have a cymbidium and its just starting to open up.

Keep it out of direct sun and a bit on the cool side during the day.
Heat will cause premature wilt of the blooms. Water on a normal
schedule, do no not let it get too dry. The plant uses water
pressure to open the blooms. Some people give the plant an extra
drink when it starts opening. But mostly put it where you can see and
enjoy. You worked hard for that bloom, you want it to last as long as
possible.

of people say they've been told not to feed their orchids while they're

I think there're many old hands on this 4rum. Therefore, please let me know if I was wrong.
- Fertilizers with high Nitrogen concentration such as 30:10:10 can promote growing but inhibit flowering. Generally, people stops this kind of fertilizers and replaces with high Potassium concentration fertilizer (to elongate flower life span).
- Flower cell structure contain mostly water (in layman term, itn't as stable as the leaf instead of their same origin), so you may keep it in protected greenhouse to advoid insect (both disease vector and pollinator are need to be advoided if you want to keep it longer).
- When watering, advoid watering directly on the flower.

PS: I think you can find many flower elongate agent at the agriculture eqquipment shops. (If you can find Benzylaminopurin, it's so cool)

There is a school of thought that too much nitrogen can inhibit flowering,
and it may be a factor -- although much less of one than either light or
temperature, for most plants, IMHO. But "inhibiting flowering" would happen
_before_ the plant initiates its buds, not while it's carrying the flowers.

Skipping a couple feedings while a big Catt is in bloom, so as to avoid
spotting the flowers, I can understand and the plant will forgive. But
skipping months of feeding while a Phal or Den stays in bloom is, I think, a
bad idea.

We generally recommend a balanced fertilizer in any event, rather than a
30-10-10, but we also don't use much bark as potting mix. Kenni

I spent ages tending to it, my family thought I was crazy, so I
definitely want it to last as long as possible!

What zone do you grow in?
I have over 300 of these & very few bloom for me?

I have 2 home depot specials. First year one of them re-bloomed. Had three
stalks, only one of which made it. I read that they need to be exposed to
cold temperatures in order to encourage them to bloom. Never could find
exactly what cold was. Being in Chicago I try to pull them inside around 40
degrees. So perhaps was more luck than skill. Though my cat eating the
leaves probably doesn't help either.

Talk to the people at Hausermann's or Oak Hill or Illinois Orchid
Society for current thought.

When we lived it Chi-town we left them out until the first snow or
just before a killing frost. Then took them in to a coolest area of
the growing space.

You are really down under! Tasmania the chunk that broke away from
Australia, at least it
looks that way on a map & it looks lovely & green.
I really need to concentrate on feeding my cymbidiums a bit more
especially to
promote blooming.
Would love to see some pics of your place.
