Nigeria and travel thereto
 

I've been asked to teach a class in Nigeria for a week or two at the end
of May (at University of Ibadan). Not sure if I should accept the offer
or not. All expenses paid, that isn't the problem. But, if you read
what the US State department says (about any country that isn't the US),
you get the distinct impression that you should stay home and stockpile
duct tape and plastic. I already have plenty of those items, although I
never considered them anti-terror weapons...

So, although I'm always happy to travel on somebody else's dollar, I'm a
little concerned about getting back. Anybody have any thoughts on
travel to Nigeria, and/or west Africa in general? And, to keep it on
target, what kind of orchids am I looking for there, anyway? *grin*

Didn't take long for that to show up... *grin* I knew I'd see a
response like that eventually.

If I could find those idiots, I would gladly try to extract the
appropriate pounds of flesh. Since time is money, and it takes me a
couple seconds to delete each e-mail, let's estimate $0.05 per e-mail
received for that scam. They owe me at least a thousand dollars...
That would amount to at least an arm, perhaps just both hands (harder to
spam people if you can't type).

Run the name of the University thru Google, along with one of your concerns.
Like I found that page by running University of Ibadan along with 'unrest'
thru the engine. If you just run the University's name you get only good
stuff.

I work with a Nigerian, so any of this is second hand hearsay. He loves his
homeland but goes back rarely, for family death etc. He said he would
definately not recommend travel outside the capitol for a USA citizen
especially white and without the British accent. The capitol is generally
safe except for what you usually find in large cities with large populations
of poor. Even there, the descrepency is so great between the haves and the
havenots that many of the haves have developed gated or walled communities.
Enjoy and good luck. For specific orchids, I'd have to look them up.

There are at least two Microcoelia in Nigeria I think, nice little
leafless lovelies, *G*. If you want, I can look up which ones so you
know where located and what color. Hint Hint!!!!!!! I'm not sure of
any vendors tho.

You do realize, I hope, that we (the US, heck, the world) is in a very
quickly changing situation regarding war and terrorism. Not that I'm trying
to fan your fears, but just realize that if you say yes today, tomorrow you
may be saying no....

Nigeria is considered strategically important to the west because of its
significant oil production. With the riots in Venezuela and war in the Gulf
expect Nigeria to watched closely by the oil traders, foreign governments
and terrorist organizations.
