Default Cattleya Aurantiaca

Novice question again:
I'm finally getting growth on a Cattleya Aurantiaca. All winter long this
seedling had single leaves with a tip starting on each leaf. This started to
grow but turned brown on the tip and is now almost down to the leaf. I cut
off the damage. Since I've only had 1 other Cattleya develop a spike, I'm
guessing that this was going to be a spike. Sound right? I sprayed the cut
with Physon 20. Wonder what went wrong.
Plant looks very good otherwise, good roots and color
