Hi just wondering whether anyone can advise me what to do with some dying
flowers on my new paphiopedilum plant please. I think I read somewhere that
with phalaenopsis that you cut at the end of the stalk just below the flower
and that that would encourage another flower to form. Is it the same with
most orchids or is that the rule for phalaenopsis only? Should I remove the
entire stem, or just flower head?

I would remove the entire stem as much as possible and just leave a little
stump. The sooner you do it the sooner it can start building up for its
next flowering effort.

I dont think the cutting doing samething on Paphiopedilum as on
Phalaenopsis. since the spike of Paphiopedilum hasnt any dormant bud.

Paphiopedilum plants will only form one inflorescence per plant. Once the
flower has faded, cut the inflorescence off as close to the plant as
possible. It ought to bloom on the next-, and each successive growth,
emanating from a short rhizome at the base of the plant.

Ray is correct, but it should be noted that some paphs put out more
than one flower per inflorescence. Check to make sure there isn't
another developing bud on the inflorescence before cutting it off.

Ummmm wait a second! would that not depend on whether it's a sequential
bloomer?
Mark, is there a name tag in the pot somewhere? What does it say? Some
Paph's are sequential bloomers (Paph. Pinocchio) and the stem should not be
cut.

My Paph Pinocchio, has been in bloom since last Christmas. At the present
time it's budding and is actively growing a new growth.
