Greenhouse Kits
 

Hi. My name is Scottie, and I've been lurking here a while, trying to keep
the plants going, some even blooming. And I've learned a great deal from
all of you --- thanks!

We live on the Texas Gulf coast, and are in the market for a greenhouse kit.
I've read with interest the recent greenhouse thread, and checked out the
sites mentioned. A Google search also turned up several other manufacturers
of greenhouse kits. Have any of you had any experience with any of these
companies: Texas Greenhouse; Santa Barbara Greenhouse; Cedar-Built
Greenhouses; Sturdi-Built Greenhouse Mfg.?

Any information will be greatly appreciated.

If you live near the Gulf coast of Texas you may have certain building code
requirements that might extend to building of greenhouses. A number of the
building codes have changed over the past several years due to the many
huricanes that have hit the area.

Check with your local Building Inspector prior to ordering any type of kit.
Once you have the information make sure that the manufacturer meets the
requirements for your area.

how about just growing them out side under some shade clothe?

I know Santa Barbara is a good outfit. I would also recommend that you look
into charleysgreenhouse.com, in the State of Washington. I was very well
satisfied with the greenhouse I bought from them, and with their telephone
advice in customizing the kit and accessories. It was easy to put up, and
after three years I haven't encountered any problems.

My husband and I have a friend on the Gulf Coast of Texas, who has
invested mucho dinero in a greenhouse. It is super hot and humid in that
locale and swamp coolers only work well with low humidity; so, it might
be best to grow outside with a super misting system.

Hi Scottie-
Good luck with the greenhouse. The advise to check local codes prior to
purchasing the kit is invaluable advice. I had a $20,000 kit in my backyard
and found tons of local regulations regarding weight bearing loads, wind
resistance etc. I had to hire engineers to guarantee specifications. The
company, which is very reputable, was unable to supply the necessary
engineering seals and specifications. It added several thousands of
unanticipated dollars in to project, untold headaches, and extended time
delays.

I'm very happy with the outcome but would clearly have done the process
differently had I been aware of the local ordinances. Do your homework
first!

Thanks to all of you who had input. You offer very good advice which we
will consider carefully.

I've checked with the local building department; apparently all they require
is a building permit and a look at your survey. I think a lath house might
be all we will need, but I think DH has his heart set on a greenhouse. So
we'll see what happens!

I also like my charleys greenhouse :) They are a bit pricy I think but good
quality and the service is top notch.
