Default 3 weeks Expedition to Ecuador in 2005

Ok,
I'm planning a trip to Ecuador in 2005. End of augaut beginning of
september.
What I would like to know are some basic tips. It's going to become a real
orchid hunt, just to see what I can find. My Aunt works at the Belgium
embassy and should be able to arange the needed paperwork.
I was thinking about one week at an altitude of 2900. Being Quito. My aunt
lives there and outside the city I saw a lot of orchids when I went in 1992.
Later a week at the coast there's a lot of forest there and a different
climat an last but not least one week in the jungle. There a belgian monk
living at a small mission just outside the jungle and he's a good friend of
my aunt.
My budget is going to be 2500Euro(=dollar) and I'm hoping to find one or
two experienced travelers to come along. Splitting the costs and helping
eachother in case of trouble. Also hoping that a niece or cousin can help
with the language.
That's the basic Idea.

So what do you think and any tips what I should remember or think off.
Cheers
Peter

You might want to contact Pepe Portillo at Ecuagenera
(http://ecuagenera.com/). He would be an excellent resource for your
trip. They also offer orchid habitat tours, and I want to go sometime.
If I recall properly, they have bought several acres at several
different elevations in some very prime locations, and much if not all
of the tours are at their own properties. Pepe's English is quite good,
and he is a nice guy.

Rob's Rules: http://www.msu.edu/~halgren
1) There is always room for one more orchid
2) There is always room for two more orchids
2a. See rule 1
3) When one has insufficient credit to purchase
more orchids, obtain more credit

How about you came along.
I'm looking for two or three people for this trip. It's not going to be
luxurious, just improvising and traveling around. Looking at tourist
atractions whenever we see them and especially looking for orchids. If
possible take a few home with us.
Just having fun and perhaps getting to know a few orchid hobbyists.

To the rest of you thanks for the responses.
Cheers

Peter,

I, too, envy you. Would love to go to Ecuador and also to the
Galapagos. We did not get this side trip when we went to Costa
Rica/Panama/Columbia. It sounds really exciting. I know it will be a
journey of a lifetime.

I went to Costa Rica two years ago. I agree with the previous posts
about "necessary items." I'd add these: diarhea medication,
water-purifier tablets, bandages and Bactine for cuts and blisters,
quick-dry clothing and underwear, a small bottle of laundry detergent,
more sox than you think you'll need (BTW, Thorlo socks are wonderful
and provide a lot of cushion if you're hiking), Afterbite for bug bite
itching, a cheap rain poncho, Ziploc bags, and a face cloth (some
hotels don't supply these because they are considered to be an item of
personal hygiene). By the way, doing laundry in some parts of Central
America is not easy and very expensive. Because of the humidity, it can
take clothing forever to dry--thus the recommendation for extra
socks--hiking boots and wet socks = blisters; sandles with no socks =
scorpion and chigger bites. If you sleep overnight in a jungle, be sure
to knock out your boots before you put them on in the morning--chances
are that a scorpion might be hiding in one.

BTW, it was the best trip of my life, and I'm a girly girl and not
inclined to discomfort or roughing it.

When I go -

I put a days underthings in a ziplock and get all the air out. Then I
Duct tape it shut over the zipper. I put an extra pair of socks for each
day in their own ziplocks and get the air out...

I worry much less about outer clothes. Cotton is the best in my
experience...It can be washed anywhere and will wear well.

For boots - get Neats foot oil and oil them daily for 4 or 5 days prior
to going if they are leather - it will help keep the feet drier.

Good luck.

BTW, it was the best trip of my life, and I'm a girly girl and not
inclined to discomfort or roughing it.

orchid
on the left of this photo!*G*

could?
There must be a webpage out there with info on what to take & do etc.?
Definitely lots of photos, waterproof camera bag, extra cards if

digital or

Bug repellant & water bottle.
