bug help
 

hi all,

my phals have become infested. i've hunted around the net and can't really
find the matching culprits. they're very small, move quick, and are kind of
greyish. my orchids are in pots in my home. the bugs seem to like the tray
beneath the pot. i've used dish soap mixtures but to no avail (i'm afraid
to be too forceful with it as all my phals are currently in bloom).

how can i eliminate these bugs? is there an 'at home' solution or do i need
professional help?

Are they silver greyish.
If so they could be silverfish. It's a bug I remember from my youth. It's
probably not the real scientific name, just one used by local folks.
I believe they were harmless, they just apear where there is wood and a high
humidity.
I believe they were about 2-3mm at most.
I believe that the only way to get rid of them was clean mix and pot for the
plants and clean the area (windowsill, cracks...) with bleach and soap.

I have never thought of silverfish with the plants. I thought
they were a part of keeping old books. I thought they only ate
paper.

I learn something new everyday here.

Try adding a glop (technical term :) ) of dish detergent to the water in the
tray. Or better yet, clean out the tray first then add the glop to kill any
that return. I've had them and at least kept them under control that way.
I don't think they were a problem for the plants tho.

As I remember they can be found around soft wood. And paper is soft wood.
But also i thought humidity is needed, so orchids do sound like the perfect
place for these bugs

they are a silvery almost see-through grey. but they are not 2-3 mm. a mm
at the most. they're very tiny and are not long but more like a tiny tiny
tiny ladybug or something that shape. it's hard to say, because they are so
small, but i don't know if silverfish is the right answer. anyone else?

I think I know what you're talking about, they are about the size of a flea
& move
faster than a speeding bullet! I don't remember the name, hoping someone
will.

There was a thread on springtails a while back, so you might be able to find
it in Google groups. Also, could these guys be decomposers? How old is the
medium?
