i know that there was much ado about the ghost orchid, polyradicion, in the movie adaptation, which i havent seen. i looked up a picture of it just for kicks, and it says that these orchids are off limits for cultivation. is this true?

No. I have seven specimens three meters away that were unflasked in
august.

They are not growing, though. Damn and blast. Seems like I have killed
them off. How can I tell? They still look like firm green spaghetti.

i do not profess to know anything about these orchids but what i do know is that they are native to florida swamps. i have been to the everglades where they allegedly come from, and it is moderately dark extremely moist and hot. i dont know how much you know about them, and it is probably more than i do, but it always helps me to know where an orchid comes from. good luck with them.

Well isn't the Ghost orchid [Polyrrhiza lindenii] a leafless species?
wouldn't it mean that the flower will emerge directly from the roots?
So "green spaghetti" is probably not such a bad thing after all :).

It is not against the law to cultivate Polyrrhiza lindeni ghost orchids...
provided you have not poached the plant out of the Florida Everglades which
would be in violation of our state laws down here. Many people have
domestically grown ghost orchids.

If the tips should look anything like a growing root from a vanda,
then no. They just sit there without getting any longer. They don't
change color when I water then either, but they go pliable as a nice
root should.

Yes, well, agreed. I only thought that there would be a bit more of
the spaghetti after three months. :)

Mine (I don't recall the genus) is growing the green tips, and does get a
bit greenish when watered, but not as clearly as a vanda root.
