Default orchids under light

hey everybody,
does anyone know about the correlation between fluorescent light and these "plant light"s that you can get at home depot? i have to grow some of my orchids under light, and i do not know if i should adhere to the rules of fluorescents, namely the distance and time exposed, or are these lights sufficiently stronger so that there are different rules?
and one other thing,
i saw that someone posted about the pronunciation of an orchid, and i was wondering about the pronunciation of coelogyne. ive heard it said some weird ways. how is it really pronounced?

I can't answer for the lighting question, but 'coelogyne' is pronounced

I know that there are a whole lot of hi-tech light bulbs available these days
and some of them do a great job but are very expensive. I've seen hi intensisty
light systems running around on over head tracks. I can't imagine how much
these things cost. I do know that if your electric bill suddenly goes sky high
the authorities sometimes think you are growing a controlled substance.

Having said all this, I grew about a hundred plants of all different types
using standard, cool white, four foot fluorescent bulbs. I had two four bulb
fixtures for the top shelf and two tube fixtures on each shelf of a three tier
FloraCart.

My growing area was in a finished basement and it was arranged like this:

______
I I
I I
I I

The line at the top was a two shelf work bench, 4x3 basically a sheet of
plywood for the table top and a lower shelf about 12 inches off the floor. The
two lines on either side were the FloraCarts.

The four tube fixture above the table top was suspended from the ceiling using
a chain that could be raised and lowered depending on what I was growing and
were usually about 24 inches above the level of the plywood. The two tube
fixtures on the FloraCarts were equally spaced and were about 18 inches above
each tray. I used a timer purchased from Graingers which was set for 14 hours a
day for eight months and 18 hours a day for four to simulate the seasons. The
bulbs were replaced every six months.

I also had several small computer box fans to circulate the air in the growing
area.

I was able to bloom everything but standard cattleys or cymbidiums and always
took first place in my class at the local societies monthly meetings.
