Ailing vanda sansai blue
Smallish plant, one or two years from flowering, I guess.
It is dropping leaves. It had nine or so leaves, there are now five green leaves and two that are turning yellow. It is now winter. The indoor humidity is about 40-50% at a steady 22-23C. The plant is getting about 35kLux of sodium-based (yellowish) light. I water it twice a week, the roots look ok to me. Help! What is happening? I haven't changed anything AFAIK. The plant has been happy the last fourteen months or so. Geir |

My first instinct was to say you're not watering often enough, but that is probably because around here, vandas are grown "bare in the basket" and watered daily [2x/day during the worst heat of summer]. I wouldn't know if 2x/week is enough for one in a pot, never having tried it. Next thought was fungus. It wouldn't hurt, and might help, to spray it with hydrogen peroxide. Ok, well, the vanda is now in a 400 lux bathroom environment which is kept at 26C or so, and getting water about once every day. It looks like it has stopped going yellow, and the roots in the bottom of the pot are slightly moist before I water again. The top roots are dry and white. I can't get any more light in there. Will I get a problem if I keep it in the bathroom two or three more weeks? Geir |

I wouldn't think so. We generally try to give stressed-out plants extra
shade while they recuperate from whatever stressed them out.
