Default Pollinating phalaenopsis

Xref: kermit rec.gardens.orchids:56348

Hello, I have been trying to find some good sources of information on
pollinating phalaenopsis. I havent had much luck online though.
I was wondering how many flowers on a spike one can pollinate? Can you
pollinate too many?

Does anyone have any pointers for me on pollinating phal. species? I
already selfed a couple of plants and I am noticing some changes in the
flowers already. I just dont want to kill the plants or anything.

Thanks
Dustin

I cannot claim to be real experienced, but based upon the limited
hybridizing I've done and observing others, I've seen really mature, strong
plants (those that routinely have three or four spikes in bloom) carry as
many as a half-dozen capsules, but in smaller plants, I'd stick with one,
rarely two.

I could be totally wrong, but it seems to me that growing a capsule is
probably pretty energy-intensive, although being green, it at least provides
some photosynthesis. I base that on observing that plants carrying capsules
don't seem to put on much other growth at the same time.

Mick,
Wouldn't that be considered murder here at RGO? What would be the
appropriate penalty for deliberate orchid murder?

Dustin,

Pollinate 6 flowers. If they all "take" then remove 4 and keep the best

two
pods. Overloading a plant with pods will kill it.... unless of course you
don't care about the survival of the host plant (which I have done on more
than one occasion for the sake of producing multiple pods).

Thanks for your reply Mick. I think the ones I have already done
"took". I have already seen some changes in the flowers, but I
understand that does not always mean it was successful.

Default Pollinating phalaenopsis

Hi all:

Just posting a follow-up on the earlier question on phal pollination a few
weeks back.

I have a couple of questions to add. I was wondering how long it takes from
the time seeds (mature embryos?!!) are removed from the green pod and put
into media to the time they generally become ready for hardening outside.
Also which media(s) would be best for mother/intermediate/final flasking for
phals. I did a couple of crosses and I think they should be ready for
flasking in a couple of months.

Thanks

Dada
