Phal. Hilo Lip
I have a question about Phal Hilo Lip.
Brief background to this inquiry: In abpo several of us commented that we would like to have a Phal Hilo Lip in response to a gorgeous photo of one, and then Mariana posted a couple of links to vendors who sell Phal Hilo Lip. One of these links was http://www.lenetteorchids.com/phal_seedlings.htm , and when I followed this link I found the following information: "Phal. Hilo Lip (Hilo Beauty x Elaine Mishima) [snip] Be sure to remember when growing Hilo Lips that you keep them on the drier side and that you spray often with fungicide and most importantly a bactericide. This is a must for Hilo lips." Yikes! Is this true? Is there something about Hilo Lips that makes them more susceptible to bacteria or fungi than other Phals? Why would that be? If this is true I will alas probably take Phal Hilo Lip off my wish list, since then it sounds like it may not be worth the trouble. One of the things I like about Phals is that they are fairly low maintenance. Is this one a high maintenance exception? Are there any other Phal hybrids or species that one should avoid unless one is willing to give them special treatment unlike that of other Phals? I've heard and read these dire predictions also for Hilo Lips. Not wanting
to test the accuracy of these statements, I sprayed wit Physan twice a month when young. That was no big deal since I usually kept a spray bottle of it around for compots etc. I now spray them one to two months, if I remember, and still nothing bad has happened. I consider Physan a mild to humans, but effective fungicide, bactericide, and (maybe) viricide. I have saved several Paphs from erwinia brown-rot with it. You can knock down mildews, mold, & algae with it. So if you keep a little Physan around, you're Hilos should be just fine. Gary "J Fortuna" wrote in message ... I use anywhere from 1/2 to 1 Tablespoon/ gallon depending what size orchid
I'm working with, although to tell the truth, I've never had a problem with the higher rate on anything. I have one in my collection and two with Hilo Lip as a parent. I don't do anything special for the plant but I do notice that these plants seem to drop a flower bud at the drop of a hat. I have a Hilo Lip in spike right not and have my fingers crossed that I get to see a full spray of flowers instead of something that looks like a pumpkin grin. Gene "J Fortuna" wrote in message ...
