potting in mosses other than sphagnum

Rather than importing processed sphagnum from New Zealand,
does anybody have experience of using other common mosses
available locally? For example my garden here in England
is a good producer of a common or garden variety moss, at
a guess Pleurozium schreberi, which is finer textured than
Sphagnum and not as long fibered, but looks like it might work
as part of a potting mix or even as a medium for small phals
and similar. Is there any data on whether some mosses inhibit
root growth, rates of decomposition and other reasons
you might want to use it or not?
