Semihydrophonics and fungi
I have a problem with fungus growing in my semihydrophonically planted
orchids. It is bad enough that it is possible to see the whitegreen fungus on the roots through the transparent pots. What am I doing wrong? How do I get rid of the fungi before it kills off my orchids? Geir |

I have considered adding 1/2 teaspoon of Physan 20/gallon on a monthly
basis for algae or fungus, but I'd check with Ray at Firstrays.com and see what he thinks. They have an excellent discussion forum on the site. I assume you're using PrimeAgra? I have two fans that provide air movement
in my growing area. They're not directly trained on the plants but about three feet above them. This, plus the ambient humidity, keeps the top layer and perhaps an inch to an inch and a half of substrate dry. If you're having problems with mold or fungus, it's more than likely moisture related and just lightly spraying the top layer with Daconil will take care of the problem temporarily; but it will be interesting to get Ray's take on this, and what he'd suggest. He's been at it a lot longer than I have. "Charles P. Peters" wrote in message ... Fungus has more to do with the condition of the plant and the temperatures
than the S/H culture technique itself. Treat with a fungicide (1% bleach works well) and try growing a bit warmer. -- Ray Barkalow First Rays Orchids http://www.firstrays.com Secure Online Ordering & Lots of Free Info! so it won't hurt the plants to spray w/ 1 % bleach?

Geir,
Plants moved into semi-hydro culture are likely to lose the root system that was acclimated to the old medium. The degree to which that holds depends on how similar or dissimilar the conditions are around the roots. It is because of that loss of roots that it is important to move a plant into S/H only when it has initiated the growth of new roots, as those will grow the physical anatomy that is appropriate for S/H, and will support the plant while the old roots die. If the plant is well established in S/H, any fungus growing on the old roots is of little or no concern. -- Ray Barkalow First Rays Orchids http://www.firstrays.com Secure Online Ordering & Lots of Free Info!
