There is an explanation on the site
(http://www.proinnovation.com/ogres/) Basically, it sounds like he
got tired of vendors complaining that it was unfair. He's accepting
comments from those that want to give their opinions.

from what has been posted on the forums, I gather some vendor was unhappy
with a rating. (no names were given) And after all the negative email, etc.
that the person running the Ogres site was getting, he decided to shut it
down. it no longer became worth the hassle he was getting.

Do we know why it is dead? Lack of money, lack of interest, or some
stupid legal problem? I can predict with 100% accuracy that eventually
some schmuck who gets a bad review will threaten legal action, even
though they have no case...

If somebody can find out why it isn't there and that it definitely
isn't coming back, I will volunteer to create/administer its
replacement. Although there may be 10 other people who want to do
that. We could make it open source...

You know, if a vendor doesn't want to be evaluated, I kind of want
to know that. A simple "this vendor has elected not to be rated by
OGRES" would be just about right.

Of course I wouldn't purchase something from them... But at least
you know their position.

Yep,

That's right.

While there was plenty of opportunity for abuse, my feeling is that if you're fair with your
customers, you have nothing serious to fear.

I was taken aback by someone who griped about First Rays because a blossom arrived a bit mushed -
but then acknowledged that she wasn't expecting it to be in-bloom or spike anyway!

Too bad. I didn't go there all that often, but it was a good source on the
occasions when I needed it.

And someone was critical of Al for being stingy with the sphagnum he
potted in. . . Kind of like ebay comments, vendors have to trust
that rational customers are able to look at the totality of the
comments and are able to filter out comments from naive customers and
kooks.

I do wonder if this was not part of it too. I can not remember
the last time I used it. If all the traffic is Gripe - you tend
to not want to offer the service.

I try to use only as much moss as I need. ...sniffle...

It's back! He's provided a way for vendors to opt out and turned it
back on.
