Hi I am a newbie in the orchid game and was just donated a collection
of 69 not so healthy orchids.

My problem is this...

.... while seem to have been able to find out most of the information
about my orchids, they are all labled accept 10, some of the orchid
labels make absolutly no sense to me. I have got the justs of how to
recognise a dendrobium to a cattleya and so on, but these few make no
sense.

I was wondering if there was any one out there willing to let me email
the list to them privately and together we could attempt to make heads
or tails of it.

I would appreciate as much respons as possible to this and look
forward to future chats with this group.

If any one on this list is from Durban/ Pietermaritzburg in South
Africa, PLEASE contact me as I might have a small business oppertunity
for you.

Thanks
Ivor

Hello Ivor,
What a surprise to see Durbs & Pmb! We lived in Durban back in the 60's.
Would love to try & help with the names so the easiest way,
is to subscribe to alt.binaries.pictures.orchids
then you could post a few at a time.
Also if you take a closeup of the tag you will be amazed at
what you can decipher.
Stick around as this is a great group, very helpful.
Cheers Wendy (In S.California)

Post the list here. You get a lot more exposure and possibility of a
correct answer. Of course, you're opening yourself up to wrong answers,
too, but that's life!

Ok you guys asked for this The following are 37 orcgids that I have
no clue what the flower looks like and some of them I can't tell what
family of orchid it is. for example - #28 - Does the 'p' in P. golden
buddha stand for Phalaenopsis? And the Raspberry Delight what family
is that?

1. Phal. Eva Louw x Phal. Coala/ Kaala?
2. Den. Thonglors Delight
3. Den. Paula Ewalt
4. Stelis Vulcanic/ Volcanic?
5. BLC. Susan Pereira
6. Den. Kultana Toshiko Blue
7. Morgenrose x Abendrot
8. Phal. Carmela's Gem x Self (Candy Stripe)
9. Cym. Strathaven 'Brighton'
10. Cym. Nonna Golden Glades
11. Den. Mary Neal x D. Valley King
12. Den. Ceaser's Candy
13. BLC. Louise Panntel x (BLC. Gontrode x L. Purpurata)
14. LC. Shellie Compton x LC. Dorothy Warne
15. C. Bowringiana x Sckomburgkia iundulata
16. Wrangel Mountain
17. LC. Fade/ Eade? (Purple)
18. BLC. Madge Fordyce 'Red Orb'
19. (Phal. Sampson x Phal. Lipperose) x Flor De Niebla
20. [Phal. Schneuwitien x Phal. Valledor x (Phal. Opaline x Phal.
Albatros)]
21. Phal. Aubrae x Phal. Topaz
22. Phal. Abendrot 'Celia'
23. BLC. mem. Robert Hack 'bright eye'
24. P. Cher Monique (Parisienne) x P. Dixie Well (Southland)
25. Phal. First Choice x Noyenna
26. Dtps. Brother Julius x Phal. Zuma Pixie
27. P. Golden Buddha x P. Gigantea 'Alan Queen'
28. (P. Golden Buddha x Raspberry Delight) x P. Lippeglut
29. P. Firelight x P. Golden Buddha
30. P. Ramond Levy x P. Andernach #1
31. P. Abendrot Me/Stem 'Jackwitter' x P. Noontide
32. C. Saphire Sparkling Waters x C. Persian Blue
33. Pot. Susie's Glow 'Crimson Magic'
34. Phal. Joyce Fell (p. Malibu Jubilation x P. Fifi)
35. P. Ramond Levy x P. Andernach #2
36. Phal. Barbara Moler x self
37. Den. Densiflorum #1

I hope I never have to write that again

Anyway, what I am really asking for is which 'family' does each one
come from, so that I know weather it is a Cymbidium, Dendrobium,
Cattleya and so on. So that I can grow it correctly. I have been so
far repotting according to the plants structure but I am starting to
get nervous, as I don't want to kill them. Any information that any
body has would be greatly appreciated.

If any one has a picture of the flower that would be great.

Thanks
Ivor

Ivor, for starters, here is a URL for abbreviations. Not sure how authentic
it is, but I have used it.
http://www.notsogreenthumb.org/orchi.../genera1.htm#A

I think the names that start with a P. in your list are
Phalaenopsis.
Usually P. = Paphiopedalum
These two are easy to differentiate.
Hope this helps & will copy your list to edit.
Cheers Wendy

Hi,

Noticed a couple of labelling errors...also, some of the crosses have
official grexes.

1. It's Phal Eva Lou. Coala doesn't exist as far as I know.
7. Phal. Morgenrose X Phal. Abendrot = Phal. Mark Rathbone [1995]
19. It should be Phal ((Samson X Lipprose) X Flor de Niebla) = Phal.
Dame Phyllis Fallows [1995], not Phal. Sampson.
20. Phal ((Schneewittchen X Valledor) X (Opaline X Albatross)) = Phal.
(Glen Paris X Michel Paris) = Phal. Memoria Denis Chiazzari [1985]. Not
Phal. Schneuwitien.
21. Should be Phal. Aubrac
26. It's Phal Zuma's Pixie
27. It's Phal. gigantea 'Alan Queen' as it is a species epithet. As
well, Phal. (gigantea X Golden Buddha) = Phal. Hualien Spotlight [1987]
28. It's Doritaenopsis Raspberry Delight, not Phalaenopsis.

Cheers,
Xi

WOW!!!

Thanks for the replies! I really wasn't expecting such a result, the
other people I wrote to weeks ago still haven't replied.

Do any of you own an Orchid House that is displayed to the public? I
need some ideas, I won't copy your ideas, but I'll just use them as
guidelines.

Thanks
