something eating orchid buds
Hi all,
Something's been eating a few small orchid buds and I've noticed an odd insect--not sure if it's the culprit. It's a grey-brown crab-like thing about 1/8 to 1/4 inch in size, sort of like a little stocky spider that's decided to rise up on it's legs. I've seen them a couple times now lurking around buds or flowers. The plants have been outside, so I don't think it's an orchid pest per se. Tried google but couldn't find it. Is this the culprit or something benign? If it's a likely culprit, how do I get rid of them? THanks, Janet |

about 1/8 to 1/4 inch in size, sort of like a little stocky spider I think they call these cinch bugs. I did not think they go after buds. You could also have problems with crickets at this time of year. |

Thanks for the suggestion. Found a picture of a cinch bug. That's not
it. It's a funny little thing. Imagine a small stocky spider and now have it sort of raise itself up on its legs, putting the legs under the body so that it's almost taller than it is wide. Of course, it is small and it hides, so it's not possible to see it real clearly. Janet TRAINMAN9 wrote: insect--not sure if it's the culprit. They can even eat a hard leathery catt leaf when they are half grown. It is about time for some of the early ones to be 1 inch but you might still find small ones. They are very hard to find in the collection and 1 can do so much damage you would swear it was a heard that had gone thru. SuE http://orchids.legolas.org/gallery/albums.php |

THanks, Janet I checked some urls that I have and didn't find anything on the bug you mention. however my guess is that you have a slug they hide in the media in the daytime and chomp away at night and they come in all sizes. here's some of the info I have http://nathist.sdstate.edu/orchids/Pests/pests.htm http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/...0/article.html http://www.orchid.org.uk/orchidproblems.htm hope it helps |

It sounds like snails or slugs to me, too. Seedlings, new shoots, and buds
(soft tissue) are especially vunerable to snails and slugs. Use a small granule type of snail/slug formula like That's It. Snail formulas for vegetables seem to take a toll on orchids should the substance get into the crown. .. . . Most slug and snail killers such as Ortho Bug-Geta Snail & Slug Killer
contain 2% Metaldehyde, 5% Carbaryl which is toxic to orchids if too much is applied it also Kills pets and other mammals, too. iron phosphate contained in brands such as Sluggo is Biodegradable and is non toxic. Lowes caries a brand that is cheaper than Sluggo just read the label just look for the ingrediant iron phosphate. |
