Identifying Blooms

As a relative newcomer to orchids, I have spent most of my efforts in
buying orchids from Lowes, Home Depot, etc. that have already bloomed.
These are, 1) very inexpensive (1/2 to 2/3 off retail price) and, 2)
not identified.
I can tell a Phalaenopsis from a Dendrobium from a Paphiopedilum, but
as these orchids rebloom, I have no idea how to identify them any
further.

With a few, I have been lucky to find their picture in a book or in a
catalogue. However, the vast majority remain a mystery. I have tried
searches in this newsgroup and on Google, but the only site I come up
with is alt.binaries.pictures.orchids, and that doesn't seem to exist.

Is there a site where I can post pictures I have taken of the blooms
in hopes that one of you experts might recognize the plant? I know
that digital photos are large files, but does such a service exist
within this newsgroup or perhaps at some aacademic institution?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Susan:
I have found ABPO! I would like to embed a small picture of my bloom
in the text of the message i post as some of the other posters do. How
would I do that?
Thanks,
Dr Bill

Hello Bill!

Alt. inaries. pictres.orchids is a newgroup who exist. If your ISP doesn`t
carry it, ask them to add it on their server!
If not, you can also subscribe to other server such as Giganews.com,
teranews.com etc...

ABPO as we call it should have B start the second word. And I
will have to agree that we would welcome your posts. Please
reduce them but clipping out the background and reducing the size
of the file. We have members who must pay for slow service by
the minute and must wait for large files to down load.

Hybrids are often similar to each other and makes it impossible
to ID most unlabeled plants beyond the level you say your able to
now. Many a Phal HD or Paph NOID has given great pleasure to its
grower. Enjoy them and do not try to attach labels to what can
not be identified.

I saw your bloom photo on ABPO before I saw this.. So you have it
down pat. I am sorry that we probably can not help you identify
your plant. Stay with us and you will find both RGO and ABPO
often get requests for ID assistance. It just is not possible
because too many flowers look too similar. Someday they will
have DNA charts tracing the plants and ways to "make sure".
